Welcome to Sixth Grade!

August 23, 2010

Dear Sixth Grade Parents,

We look forward to working with you and your child this school year. We believe that good communication between parents and teachers holds the key to student success. Your child’s agenda is our main source of communication. If you wish to set up a conference, please send a note to your child’s teacher. Our conference time is from 11:00-12:00. You may wish to contact us through Navarro ISD website www.nisd.us or by phone at 830-372-1943.
In order to be successful in sixth grade, it is important that you follow district, campus, and classroom procedures. Each six weeks, there will be an opportunity for students to participate in a reward activity by keeping up with their assignments, maintaining passing grades, having three or fewer absences, and earning six or fewer "strikes" with no ISS referrals in their agenda.

Strategies for Success

The following items will help your child get off to the best possible start in sixth grade:

  • Come to school on time and rested. School begins at 8:00.
  • Agendas and other items for parent signature are sent home on Fridays. Please sign and return these materials on Monday. Failure to do so will result in a strike.
  • Review the Student Handbook with your child, including the section on the dress code.
  • Please see that your child keeps all textbooks covered.
  • Don't procrastinate! Designate a specific time to do homework, even if it's just reviewing your notes.
  • Bring the necessary supplies to the classroom everyday: paper, pencils, red pens, & AR book.
  • Be courteous of others. Treat them the way you would like to be treated.
  • Participate and ask questions when you don't understand something. The only dumb question is the one not asked.
  • Use your class time and tutorials wisely. This could reduce the work load at home tremendously.
  • Have fun learning and keep a positive attitude.

RULES & EXPECTATIONS

1.) Treat others with respect.
2.) Use 12" voice.
3.) Remain on task.
4.) Be responsible.
5.) Bring supplies everyday and replenish when needed.

CONSEQUENCES

1st infraction- Verbal warning
2nd infraction- Strike (X) and note in the agenda.

Parents will be contacted in the event of a persistent misbehavior. For any serious infraction, such as fighting, the student will automatically be sent to the principal's office.

HOMEWORK AND MAKE-UP POLICY

Homework and unfinished assignments will be turned in on the assigned due date. Work turned in one day late will result in a strike and 20 points off of the assignment grade. Work turned in two days late will result in 40 points off the assignment grade. If the work is still not turned in on the third day, then the assignment will be given a zero. Students that are absent will be given one day for every day that they were absent to make up missed assignments. Work not turned in after this time will be treated as late work as explained above. If the student knows they will absent on a given day, they can request homework ahead of time so they don't get behind and feel overwhelmed.

We believe that working together can make a difference in education.

Respectfully,

Mrs. Carter
